Right-sided heart failure

Most patients between the ages of 45 to 70 around the world suffer from serious chronic diseases and the most important diseases of them are the heart diseases especially the problems of heart's performance such as heart failure.

The right-sided heart failure is one of the congestive heart failure's types, and this happens when the heart cannot pump out enough blood to meet the body's organs demands. There are many reasons and danger symptoms for the heart failure that we will talk about in this article.

In this article:

The causes of the right-sided heart failure

The symptoms of the right-sided heart failure

How can the right-sided heart failure be diagnosed

The treatment

The causes of the right-sided heart failure

In many cases, right-sided heart failure often happens because of lift-sided heart failure as the heart muscle cannot do its job well in the both sides.

If the cause of right-sided heart failure isn't the lift-sided heart failure and there isn't a problem with the lift side of the heart so, the cause of the failure then is the increasing of blood pressure in the pulmonary artery, which makes it harder for the right side to pump blood into, because of increasing the workload of the right ventricle and this makes the heart failure biventricular.

Chronic lung disease such as: emphysema and pulmonary embolism, also may causes the right-sided heart failure because of pulmonary hypertension (increasing the blood pressure in the pulmonary artery).

The right-sided heart failure can be a result of an abnormal connection between the two sides of the heart that know as: (lift-to-right shunt) and this usually presents from birth.

Coronary artery disease, which is a disease that effect on the arteries that supply blood and oxygen to the various parts of the heart, also can cause thee right-sided heart failure by blocking the blood supply to the heart so the heart becomes weaker and cannot pump the blood out well.

Some studies found that some drugs may cause right-sided heart failure such as: some chemotherapy and diabetes medications.

The symptoms of the right-sided heart failure

Tiredness & fatigue; because of low levels of oxygen in the blood.

Palpitation, that heart beats harder and faster than it usually does.

Increasing in urine production.

The jugular vein distension; because the blood is not entering the right heart.

Fitting edema in the PDL area in feet.

Hepatomegaly, that happens when the blood backs up to the liver and spleen, then liver and spleen becomes larger and that is so painful.

Ascites

Shortness of breath and coughing.

How can the right-sided heart failure be diagnosed?

To diagnose the heart failure correctly, doctors want to make sure of the heart's performance and size, and check some of the body's organs by making blood tests. So, there are some ways to diagnose the right-sided heart failure and the other types of congestive heart failure.

Checking the performance of the patient's heart by asking him to make some exercises to make the heart beats faster. By this test, doctors can check the heart beats, rhythm and the blood pressure.

Taking images for the heart using the Cardiac CT Scan, as X-rays and computers that are used can take more detailed photos than an ultrasound, or using Chest X-ray that can show the lungs too.

Making a Cardiac catheterization by inserting a long and flexible tube in the arm through a blood vessels and this catheter takes X-ray movie to show the blockages in the heart.

Pulmonary functions test to check the lungs performance at the breathing process.

Echocardiogram, which is an ultrasound test that takes moving images of the chambers and valves of the heart.

Coronary angiography that can be done during making the Cardiac catheterization.

Studying the heart tissue under a microscope, as this small heart piece can be taken by making myocardial biopsy to the patient.

The Treatment

There is no doubt that changing the lifestyle is the most important step in the right treatment but in the case of heart failure, the Medications play an important role in the treatment, as it have many missions such as: lower the cholesterol levels and Prevent blood clots .Also, there are another medical procedures that should be done to treat the right-sided heart failure such as:

Ventricular assist device surgery

Heart transplant surgery

Coronary bypass surgery

Heart valve repair or replacement

The Medications for the treatment:

Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors

Angiotensin II receptor blockers

Beta blockers

Diuretics

Aldosterone antagonists

Inotropes

Digoxin

Patients may need to take more than one medication that must be prescribed by the doctor.
